Grand American Hunt Set for January 3-5 A record crowd is expected this year with over 300 hunters participating each of the two nights. The event is sactioned by the United Kennel Club (UKC). The Grand American Hunt is a licensed Purina Points Event and is the first event of the season. Hunters bring their prize-winning coon dogs to compete with hopes of winning the coveted title of “Grand American Champion.” The dogs earn points for their ability to locate and track the animals, but the raccoons are not injured or killed. Dog breeders will be available to sell dogs and other vendors will be available to provide other hunting-related items. There is no admission charge to attend the Grand American Hunt, but there is a $2.00 per car parking fee at the Fairgrounds. Early arrivals can attend COON FEST on Thursday, January 3, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the “Big Tent” at the Orangeburg County Fairgrounds. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Beef Stew will be served and entertainment will include country music. Local businesses and organizations have been generous with providing door prizes that will be given away. On Friday, January 4, at 7:00 p.m., the Grand American will introduce a new feature to the hunt…Grand Slam Entertainment. This year’s program will feature nationally-known humorist and author Joey Hancock and the southern, gospel band High Cotton. Joey Hancock uses “down home” humor to present a message about God and his great outdoors. He was the 2006 Georgia Writers’ Association Author of the Year for his book Success Afield: Principals for a Sportman’s Life. The program will be held under the “Big Tent”. There is no charge for admission. For more information, please contact the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce, 803.534.6821.
